About Us
The University of Cincinnati Taekwondo Club (UCTKD) has been providing students with martial arts instruction for more than 50 years. Our club, lead by Master John Ritter III since 2011, focuses on the Korean martial art of Taekwondo. Master Nicole Dangelo joined Master Ritter soon after he took over. Together the two of them have kept the club up to speed with the ever-changing requirements of the outside world. Taekwondo is one of the hundreds of martial arts and focuses the most on kicking. Kicking drills build strength, flexibility, stamina, and agility. In addition to kicking drills, we focus on forms, sparring, and self-defence. Taekwondo is an excellent way to get into (or stay in) good physical condition.
UCTKD is a student organization, and student leadership is a key part of our success. Student officers are responsible for organizing fundraising, teaching, mentoring, and creating our martial arts family as our home away from home. It is the student participation, enthusiasm, and dedication that makes each class enjoyable to attend.
In 2013 Master Ritter changed the club format to teach the universal Kukkiwon methodology, which is the international certifying body for Taekwondo and joined the Taekwon Moodo Association (TMA). Teaching Kukkiwon methodology provides consistency and an easier transition as students enter and move on from UCTKD. This also allows for unity among our students and opens the door to the competitive circuit. The TMA, lead by Grandmaster Ron Hickey, is the local association under which we promote our students.
